Our Story : Matson Ground

Matson Ground Estate Company is nearly 100 years old and manages around 500 hectares of farmland and woodland close to Windermere and 150 hectares at Braesteads Farm near Patterdale. Matson Ground Farm is run organically with our second farm, Braesteads, in the Grisedale valley near Patterdale, farmed conventionally. Both benefit from Stewardship agreements with Defra - www.mgecl.co.uk

Holiday Cottages are an important part of the estate, of which we have ten. Elm How, near Patterdale, was our first and the adjoining Cruck Barn, was later converted from an earlier cow byre. Helm Farm is a converted barn and the four units which make up this pretty complex were added to the collection in 1990. Our most recent addition is Birkdale House on the heart of the estate. This traditional Lakeland home was originally built in 1881 and boasts a number of Arts and Crafts features which have been lovingly preserved. Also on the Estate are sixteen residential properties, and two rural Business Centres at Low House and Low Cleabarrow.
