Nestled in some of the most breathtaking corners of the Lake District, our cottages at Ullswater and Birkdale House at Windermere offer the perfect base for exploring everything this stunning national park has to offer.

Ullswater

Elm How and Cruck Barn sit in an ideal position for those who love the great outdoors. Situated on the famous Coast to Coast path, the cottages are surrounded by some of the most dramatic walking country in the Lake District, with stunning routes through the Grisedale valley to suit all abilities. Helvellyn, St Sunday Crag and Grisedale Tarn are all within easy reach, making this an ideal base for keen walkers and seasoned fell-goers alike.

Just a short distance away lies the pretty village of Glenridding, nestled on the southern tip of Ullswater. Once the heart of a thriving lead mining industry, Glenridding is now a much-loved destination for walkers and visitors, with plenty of character and charm. From here, you can discover nearby highlights such as the spectacular Aira Force waterfall, the tranquil shores of Glencoyne Bay and the iconic Ullswater Steamers – a wonderful way to experience one of the most beautiful lakes in England.

Windermere

Birkdale House, enjoys an equally enviable location at the heart of Matson Ground. Windermere and Bowness are both within easy reach, offering a wonderful variety of cafés, bars, restaurants, boutique shops and local attractions, including the ever-popular World of Beatrix Potter.

England’s largest lake is on the doorstep, with activities ranging from steamer trips and boat hire to paddleboarding and sailing. For a more leisurely pace, the shoreline walks at Cockshott Point and Miller Ground are simply lovely.

Matson Ground itself is also criss-crossed by public footpaths, including the Dales Way, which stretches all the way to Ilkley in West Yorkshire, with a rewarding detour to the summit of Brant Fell and its sweeping views over Lake Windermere and the surrounding fells.
