Five Dog Friendly Pubs in the Lake District
13 October 2023

For those of you with dogs, the Lake District has long been a favourite destination. Hardly surprising really with such stunning landscapes and picturesque surroundings. No wonder so many of you decide to explore the region with your four-legged friends.

If you're staying in Matson Ground Lodge or Elm How, you might like to know that there are a number of pubs where your canine companion is more than welcome. Here we'll round up five of our favourites - three near Windermere and two which are closer to Elm How.

The Hare and Hounds at Bowland Bridge

The Hare and Hounds at Bowland Bridge is nestled deep in the Winster Valley to the east of Lake Windermere. Whether you've been out on the fells, cycling the lanes or are simply looking for some cracking food without the fussiness, the Hare and Hounds will make you feel more than welcome. And the same goes for your canine companions.

You'll find classic pub dishes here, such as beer battered fish and chips or steak and ale pie, as well as daily specials, lighter meals and vegetarian dishes. For something truly special, make sure you book a table for Sunday lunch, especially if you're partial to a Yorkshire Pudding.

The Flying Pig in Bowness

Just down the hill from Matson Ground Lodge is the Flying Pig. The Flying Pig is a traditional family friendly Lakeland pub offering seasonal food made using only the finest locally sourced ingredients. It also serves a fantastic selection of local real ales, fine wines and premium lagers and ciders.

Dogs are welcome in the bar area and the pub has dedicated taps and bowls outside where dogs can enjoy a refreshing drink.

The Watermill Inn at Ings

Just a couple of miles down the A591 towards Kendal is the village of Ings where you'll find the Watermill Inn, a multi-award winning, family run pub and brewery surrounded by glorious countryside.

The pub is renowned for brewing its own beers, twelve in total, and many of them have some sort of canine reference in the name, such as Golden Retriever, a Bit'er Ruff or Collie Wobbles, a nod to the fact that dogs are warmly welcomed.

The White Lion Inn, Patterdale

For guests staying at Elm How, the White Lion Inn is a dog friendly pub offering a warm and inviting atmosphere. Whether you've just finished a long hike along the Ullswater Way or simply want to relax with a traditional pub meal, the White Lion has got you covered.

Dogs are welcome in the bar area where you can enjoy classic British pub dishes and a selection of local ales.

The Traveller's Rest, Glenridding

Just up the road in Glenridding is the Traveller's Rest, a charming and traditional Lakeland pub. Not only is it a popular choice for hikers and tourists, but it's also known for its dog friendly approach, where dogs are more than welcome in the bar area. And chances are yours won't be the only pooch in the place

There are so many great dog friendly pubs in the Lake District where your furry friend will get a warm welcome. And there are plenty more to choose from, so keep an eye on our blog for another instalment. In the meantime, if you want any more information, please do get in touch.
