| Fund raising for red squirrel conservation | |||||||||||||||||||||
| We are members of the Tourism
and Conservation Partnership and we invite our clients to contribute £1
to red squirrel conservation. To date, we and our clients have
raised £986. The red squirrel is our only native squirrel species. During the last century it has undergone a drastic decline and is now mainly confined to northern England, Scotland and parts of Wales. The main cause of this decline is competition with the introduced American grey squirrel. The grey squirrel is larger than the red and better able to survive harsh weather and periods of food shortage. Funds raised have enabled "Red Alert North West" and "Save our Squirrels" to persuade suppliers of red squirrel feed mixes to add essential vitamins to help red squirrels survive severe winter weather and fund research into squirrel poxvirus, a disease carried by grey squirrels which has so far proved fatal to red squirrels. Further work has included sending a comprehensive Report to the Highway Authority calling for action to reduce the risk of red squirrel road deaths, by providing warning signs and rope bridges at known black-spots and raising public awareness by attendance at Country Shows; giving talks to schools and other interest groups; printing leaflets for distribution from Tourist Information Centres; and answering many hundreds of telephone, e-mail and postal enquiries. Important Woodland Management Plans have also been created for a suite of new Red Squirrel Woodland Refuges across the North West managed by landowners and "Save our Squirrels". |
